THE CANADIAN KENNEL CLUB
BREED STANDARD

THE GREYHOUND

Origin and Purpose
The Greyhound is the oldest pure breed in existence, yet its form and function remains unchanged since the dawn of time. It is a coursing dog of the highest order, capable of great speed, agility and endurance in pursuit of its quarry. Great care should be taken to preserve the coursing ability, functional structure and temperament necessary in the field. As a pet the Greyhound is calm, gentle, healthy and good natured.

General Appearance
The Greyhound should project an image of speed, power, balance, grace and moderation. Extremes and exaggeration should be discouraged. Movement at a trot should be free flowing, powerful, with no wasted movement, converging on a single track. At a trot the head is carried forward and even with or slightly above the level of the withers. Faults should be considered to the extent that they would affect the dog's ability in the field. The Greyhound should always be shown fit, well-muscled and in a natural state.
